steve: goes with nancy to have dinner with barb’s family even though he was not barb’s friend and had no emotional ties to her simply because he was supporting his girlfriend
steve: while incredibly insecure about his grades, which he was working hard to try and improve, was also optimistic about a future where he could stick around for his girlfriend’s senior year and spend time with her
steve: tried his best to keep nancy level headed while she was drunk and even when he was (understandably) upset about her emotional outburst while drunk, still made sure someone got her home safely
steve: did not berate her or insult her for moving onto jonathan so quickly, and did not rise to any bait thrown his way insulting nancy
